Everyday Experiences of The Libertarian Way

Libertarianism is known as a political system that endorses unhampered capitalism. It supports an extremely limited government that has only one function—protecting an individual’s life, liberty and property—or it advocates no government at all. Is this all there is to it—or is it more than this?

Libertarians’ advocacy for the system of unhampered capitalism is a spirited defense of individual liberty and freedom. Since unhampered capitalism means all voluntary exchanges are legal and all involuntary exchanges are illegal—libertarians are extremely honest individuals. A libertarian who acted contrary to this and violated another’s life, liberty and property would be a hypocrite. In fact he couldn’t call himself a libertarian.

How an individual feels, thinks and acts in his personal life determines whether he or she is a libertarian. There are no doubt honest individuals who enjoy Libertarians Pleasures on a daily basis—but are unaware they are libertarians.

Libertarianism, Objectivism and The Spiritual

Libertarianism is a way of life. It is your sense of life and how you act in your daily affairs. If you embrace the pleasures of the body, mind and spirit then you are living The Libertarian Way. If pain, suffering and frustration are your main experiences then you somehow wandered off the path or never actually discovered it in the first place.

Many from the Objectivist school of Ayn Rand place a primary purpose on the power of reason. And indeed reason is of vast importance. A glance at our system of government and some of the “ideas” our candidates for office are espousing demonstrate that reason is in short supply.

Some Objectivists are atheists and disdain the spiritual. This is certainly understandable when you see all the misery, mayhem and suffering that organized religions have caused. Millions upon untold millions have been sacrificed in the name of a savior.

I believe that it is reasonable to denounce organized religion. However, it doesn’t logically follow to also denounce the spiritual. Organized religion is an external set of dogmatic rules that have nothing to do with the spiritual. A spiritual state of being comes from within the individual. It has to do with his relationship to the universe. It has nothing to do with dogma, moralizing about “sins of the flesh” or condemning capitalism and supporting the anti-life social system of socialism—as most religious systems do.

By the way Ayn Rand’s masterpiece “Atlas Shrugged” is a highly spiritual book—one of the most enlightening books I have read. What else could a book be that is about productive men and women reaching the heights of greatness because their spirit burns bright? Anyone who read it and says it isn’t spiritual apparently didn’t understand it.
